Ten years in the planning and three years in development sees
the dawn of a new era in RC tank battle systems.
It is the system that serious wargamers have dreamed about, but
never thought they would see.
As a military history enthusiast it is frustrating to see tank v
tank combat using models reduced to little more than a
superficial "shoot 'em up" using infra red technology. With
these simple systems battles are fought at point blank range
with only a token recognition of the relative prowess of tank
types. It might be fun for some, but it lacks realism.
The challenge we accepted all those years ago was to find a

players to fight their models at scale ranges of 2000m + (Infra
red systems for 1/16th tanks give you a little over 300 scale
In addition we wanted to accurately represent the offensive and
defensive characteristics of individual tanks. Gun and armour
performance are critical factors in determining outcomes.
Certainly an umpire guessing ranges and shaking dice to
determine outcomes was a non-starter.
We considered using lasers, but this is neither practical, nor
effective, when you are trying to lay the beam on a 1m long
model 200m away on the other side of a field. Besides lasers
travel in straight lines - gun fire follows a trajectory
dependent on muzzle velocity.
We finally settled on a mesh radio system using model based GPS
and micro-processors to determine outcomes in real time.
